A message from the organizing committee

Osu!

Welcome to the official website for the Vancouver Cup 2026 Karate Kata Championships! Year after year, the Vancouver Cup has been one of Vancouver Seiyu Karate’s biggest and most exciting events, and we are thrilled to welcome competitors, volunteers, families, and supporters from across our many dojos.

Stepping onto the tournament floor takes courage, discipline, and dedication — qualities built through hard work in the dojo.

Whether this is your first competition or your fiftieth, we encourage you to challenge yourself, support one another, and enjoy the experience. We have confidence in every participant and cannot wait to see your spirit and determination shine.

If you're not competing this year but would like to support our event, please consider signing up as a volunteer. From helping with setup to assisting competitors and guests throughout the day, our volunteer team plays an important role in creating a positive tournament experience for everyone.

We look forward to seeing you at the Vancouver Cup 2026 — let’s make it an unforgettable tournament! Osu!

* Showcase Division

We are excited to bring back the non-competitive showcase division at the Vancouver Cup this year! Students who sign up as a showcase performer will be given a chance to perform their kata in front of an audience without the added pressure of being judged and scored. There are no age or belt requirements, and participants can perform either individually or in groups. All showcase performers will be presented with a participation certificate and medal at the closing ceremonies, but will not be eligible for ranking within any of our competitive divisions.

Tie Breaker Rules
Awards
1
Children 12 and under
A tie breaker will not be conducted. It means multiple competitors can share the same placement and medals.
Competitors who achieve the highest three scores in each category will be awarded a medal.*
2
Teens and Adults 13 and older
An extra performance to determine 1st, 2nd, 3rd of each category will be conducted when multiple competitors score the same points within the top three placements.
Top three competitors of each category will received a medal. The first place winner will receive a trophy.
3
Showcase Division
Not Applicable
A Participation certificate and a participation medal to all showcase performer

* By not implementing tie breakers, our goal is to enhance the chances for children to secure a top 3 placement (i.e., it is possible for multiple participants to achieve gold medals within the same category). This approach aims to recognize more children for their efforts. However, one challenge is that organizers cannot predict in advance how many children will receive awards. Ordering a specific number of trophies risks falling short, while ordering too many would strain our budget, potentially necessitating an increase in entry fees. Therefore, we regret that we can only provide medals, not trophies, for the children's divisions. We appreciate your understanding.

Scoring

Progressive Assessment Scoring System for Kata (PASS)

The Progressive Assessment Scoring System (PASS) is a growth-based scoring system that evaluates a competitor's overall kata performance and is focused on rewarding achievements instead of penalizing mistakes. This scoring framework defines five distinct stages of kata development which are used as judging criteria.
