2010 Newton Tournament
February 27, 2010, Surrey BC

The annual Newton Tournament once again encompassed Kyokushin students and officials in the Lower Mainland region. A total of fifteen students from our dojo took part of the event and fought to the best of their ability. Although a lot of them were still rookies in the knockdown competition, they were capable of staying composed during the matches and bringing in several medals. Among all of them, two individuals stood out most in this tournament.

Gerald Gutierrez, who is only a yellow belt, took 2nd place in the Men's Lightweight Open division. Gerald one-sidedly won the first match by effectively using Shita-Zuki (body cut). Then, he put up a tough fight against Sempai Tony in the finals. They kept hammering each other with vicious shita-zuki and low kicks for the entire round. The grueling match went into overtime and finally came to an end when Sempai Tony threw more number of punches and won by decision. Despite the loss, Gerald gave his best performance of his fighting career and proudly received the Silver Medal.

Pasha Mykhaylov started off as a junior fighter several years ago and worked his way up to Youths divisions in recent years. Today,  Pasha finally made his entry to the Men's Heavyweight Open division. In his first fight, Pasha did not even sweat as he captured Ippon (Full Point) with Shita-Zuki at 20 seconds into the match. In the finals, he faced off against Sempai Matthew of the PoCo Dojo. The tough match made them fight in an extension round where Pasha accelerated and doubled up his punches towards the end of the bout. The 17-year-old brown belt won the Gold Medal and will further motivate himself for greater achievements.

The tournament was a great success. I would like to thank Sensei Tom and his team of the Newton Dojo for hosting the event. This type of tournament is very much needed for novice competitors to gain enough experience to fight in high caliber events in the future. Osu.
